I have an image of god
as an ideal,
a Platonic form
of all the warmth and love
I’ve ever felt,
that left me
bound and open,
with an overwhelmed
and overflowing heart,
before it ran as sand
through the fingers of my want,
of the vigilant justice
my parents once mirrored
when my eyes were too wide to see
to the truth;
and I like to behave
as though this ideal is watching,
holding me to his,
so that I’ll radiate the beauty
I long to see,
so that I’ll walk the straight and narrow,
and become a spitting image,
so that I wouldn’t disappoint him,
should we ever meet,
the way he’s sure to disappoint me.
